Being a grandparent or family member raising a grandchild--or grandchildren–presents a particular set of challenges and joys. Mentally, emotionally, logistically and financially, there are numerous hills to climb through the years. As more and more grandparents in our country take on this responsibility, there is more need for support, information and friendship with those who are in a similar situation.
Grandparents as Parents (GAP) helps to fill the need for community in Shenandoah County. The group welcomes all types of kinship families, whether it be grandparents raising grandkids or other adult relatives with guardianship. Sponsored by Emmanuel Episcopal Church, GAP members meet once a month at the church to enjoy a homemade meal together, offer support and share resources. Area experts come to share their knowledge with the group, discussing topics ranging from internet safety to mental health. Of course, kids are always welcome at the meetings and childcare is provided! .
Meetings are 6:00 to 8 p.m. the third Monday of every month at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 122 E. Court St., Woodstock. Parking is available in the church lot. Please enter through the double doors of the social hall or via the ramp to the left side of the building for handicap accessibility. The location may change for special events and we are on hiatus in the summer, so check the Facebook group for the latest info.
For more information, including the topic of the next meeting and dinner menu see the calendar, or join the GAP Facebook group.
